The Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Overland Tour is an exciting journey designed for those who enjoy adventure, comfort, and cultural exploration. Unlike trekking, this trip allows you to experience the dramatic landscapes of Mustang, the grandeur of the Himalayas, and the richness of local traditions while traveling in style.
Discovering Mustang
Mustang, often called the Kingdom of Lo, lies north of Kagbeni and is renowned for its Tibetan-influenced culture and heritage. Once home to kings who lived in imposing square-walled palaces draped with prayer flags, Mustang still holds an aura of mystery and history. At an average elevation of 3,840 meters, the region offers stunning views of peaks such as Dhaulagiri and Annapurna.
The landscape here is unlike most of Nepal—dry, barren, and filled with eroded canyons, colorful rock formations, and desert-like valleys. A highlight of the region is the Jhong Caves, or Sky Caves—a network of more than 10,000 man-made caves. Archaeologists have uncovered mummified human remains, Buddhist paintings, and sculptures here, dating back to the 12th–14th centuries.
A Cultural and Scenic Adventure
The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is a gateway to the mystical world of Lo Manthang, the ancient walled city that was closed to outsiders for centuries. This isolation preserved a unique culture deeply connected with Tibetan Buddhism. The route lies in Nepal’s rain shadow, making it one of the country’s driest yet most visually striking areas.
Comfort, Luxury, and Flexibility
This journey is ideal for travelers who want the experience of the mountains without trekking. It emphasizes comfort, privacy, and personalized service, offering a mix of relaxation and adventure. From cultural sightseeing to thrilling drives across rugged terrain, the tour caters to diverse interests.
It is suitable for all age groups—whether you are older and want to immerse yourself in culture, or younger and seeking adventure, Mustang has much to offer. Activities include archery, horse riding, motorbiking, enduro rides, and mountain biking, alongside the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Lo Manthang.
If budget is not a concern and you are looking for a comfortable yet adventurous way to explore Nepal’s last hidden kingdom, this trip could be the perfect match.
Many itineraries (such as HoneyGuide’s 6-day Jeep Tour) include travels from Pokhara to Jomsom, Muktinath, then to Lo-Manthang, with extended sightseeing along the way.
- Several 7–11 day packages begin with Kathmandu to Pokhara via Jeep or flight, then move on to Kalopani, Chhuksang, Lo Manthang, and return through Marpha or Jomsom.
- The awe-inspiring Sky Caves (Jhong Caves) near Lo Manthang feature over 10,000 man-made caves packed with ancient Buddhist artifacts, paintings, and mummies—dating from the 12th to 14th century.
A Typical Day on Tour
Your day begins with a Himalayan sunrise and a hearty breakfast (choices may include eggs, toast, cereals, and hot beverages). After breakfast, the jeep ride continues toward the next destination.
Along the way, you’ll stop at scenic viewpoints, caves, and cultural sites, with time for snacks, hot drinks, and photography. Lunch is usually enjoyed at a scenic stopover with beautiful views.
In the afternoon, you’ll reach the day’s destination and settle into your guesthouse. The rest of the day is yours—relax with a book, take a short village walk, or simply rest. Evenings are often spent by a warm fire in the communal dining area, enjoying snacks, drinks, and sometimes the local homemade beverages such as apple cider or millet-based alcohol.
This balance of comfort, culture, and exploration makes each day in Mustang a memorable part of your journey.
Restricted Area Permits
Since Upper Mustang lies close to the Tibetan border, it is classified as a restricted area. To travel here, you’ll need the following permits:
- Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit – USD 30
- Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit – USD 500 for the first 10 days, with an additional USD 50 per day thereafter
We will arrange these permits for you before the trip.
Flight Delays in Pokhara and Jomsom
For this trip, Twin Otter flights are commonly used between Pokhara and Jomsom. However, flights in this region are highly dependent on weather conditions and may sometimes be delayed or canceled due to mountain weather or technical issues.
In the event of flight cancellation, we will arrange alternative road transportation to ensure you continue your journey without affecting your international flight schedule. Please note that:
- The cost of road transport will be covered by the value of your canceled flight ticket.
- There will be no refund for the Jomsom–Pokhara flight if alternative ground transport is used.
Helicopter Rescue and Insurance
Traveling in the Himalayas comes with risks such as altitude sickness, injuries, or other health issues. For your safety, your travel insurance policy must include helicopter rescue coverage. This ensures that, in case of emergencies, you can be airlifted from the mountains quickly and receive proper medical attention.
