Exploring the base camp of the highest peak on earth isn’t enough for hard-core adventurers. Precisely for this reason, we have extended your exploration to challenging mountain passes leading to the exquisite views of Gokyo lakes. On a 17-day expedition, you will experience the classic Everest Base Camp trek along with tempting add-ons of the Gokyo Ri and its lakes.
The Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lake is a 17-day circular adventure that combines natural beauty, cultural immersion, and high-altitude challenge. Unlike the classic EBC trail, this route diverges from Namche Bazaar, passing through remote villages and the serene Gokyo Valley before reconnecting to the base camp route via the Cho La Pass.
Distinct Features of the Route
Kathmandu → Lukla (Flight) →Phakding → Namche Bazaar → Dole→ Machhermo → Gokyo Lakes →Hike Gokyo Ri (5,357m) → Thagnak → Cho La Pass (5,420m) → Dzongla→ Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp →Kala Patthar (5,545m) → Descend via Pheriche → Namche → Lukl
The journey begins with an early morning transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for a scenic flight to Lukla, offering sweeping views of the Himalayan range. Depending on the season, flights may operate directly from Kathmandu or be rerouted through Manthali Airport during peak trekking months (March–May and September–November). In that case, you will be picked up around 12:30 a.m., driven five hours to Manthali, and then take a 20-minute flight to Lukla. Direct flights from Kathmandu are available in the off-season months, while a shared helicopter option from Kathmandu to Lukla (around USD 550 per person for a group of five) is also available year-round.
Upon arrival at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,850 m / 9,350 ft), the trek officially begins. Today’s hike is kept short to allow for gradual acclimatization. The trail descends through Chaurikharka village and follows the Dudh Koshi River before reaching Phakding. Along the way, you’ll enjoy your first taste of Sherpa culture and Himalayan landscapes. With extra time, you may visit the Rimishung Monastery in Phakding.
Leaving Phakding, the trail continues north along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges decorated with colorful prayer flags, including the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge. The route gradually ascends through pine and rhododendron forests, with occasional glimpses of snow-covered peaks.
After entering Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, your permits will be checked before continuing the steady climb. Along the way, you’ll enjoy your first clear views of Mount Everest and other towering summits.
The day’s hike ends at Namche Bazaar, the lively Sherpa town that serves as the cultural and trading hub of the Khumbu region. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, Namche offers a perfect blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty.
Today is reserved for rest and acclimatization, an essential part of preparing for the higher altitudes ahead. Namche Bazaar, the main trading town of the Khumbu region, is the perfect place to spend the day.
You can take short hikes to nearby viewpoints for closer views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other peaks. Exploring the town itself offers a glimpse into Sherpa culture, with visits to the Sherpa Culture Museum, local markets, and shops selling traditional crafts, cheese, and trekking gear.
Other options include the Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Center, the Hillary School, a yak farm, or one of the local monasteries, each adding to the cultural experience. Namche also has several cafes, restaurants, and lodges with Wi-Fi, making it a lively spot to relax.
This acclimatization day is not only about resting but also about absorbing the unique atmosphere of the Sherpa capital.
After a memorable stay in the Sherpa capital, the trek continues toward Dole, passing through vibrant rhododendron and pine forests. The trail winds through traditional Sherpa villages, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and a deeper connection to the natural and cultural richness of the Khumbu region.
Today, the route diverges from the classic Everest Base Camp trail, which normally heads to Tengboche. The path to Dole is rocky with several ups and downs. About two hours into the hike, you will reach Mong La Pass (3,957 m), where sweeping views of Mt. Ama Dablam (6,812 m) and Mt. Khumbila (5,761 m) await. From the pass, the trail descends through dense forests to the riverside settlement of Phortse Tenga, before continuing on to Dole, your destination for the night.
Leaving Dole, the trail climbs through alpine meadows that serve as yak pastures during the summer months. These meadows are often adorned with shrines and fluttering prayer flags. In summer, yaks graze peacefully here, while in winter the area becomes barren as locals migrate to lower altitudes to escape the cold.
The trek continues with spectacular views of Mt. Cho Oyu, the world’s fifth-highest peak. The route passes through quaint villages such as La Palma and Ruja, before reaching Machhermo, a serene settlement nestled amidst towering mountains. On the way, the trail descends slightly through the Kentega Valley, ascends toward the Cho Oyu massif, and climbs near the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier. Machhermo offers a peaceful stop to rest and acclimatize further.
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the Gokyo Valley, with the highlight being the Gokyo Lakes. Leaving Machhermo early, the trail first passes through high alpine meadows to reach Phanga, where a memorial honors those who lost their lives in past landslides.
As the path narrows, you will encounter the first Gokyo Lake, the smallest of the five major glacial lakes in the area. Continuing a short distance past the third lake, you arrive at Gokyo village, one of Nepal’s highest settlements, nestled in the heart of the valley. From here, Gokyo Ri rises above, offering one of the region’s most famous viewpoints.
The turquoise waters of the lakes, framed by towering snow-capped peaks, create a serene and breathtaking atmosphere. Upon reaching Gokyo, you will settle into your lodge and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, preparing for the upcoming adventures in this remarkable Himalayan setting.
Today is dedicated to rest and acclimatization in Gokyo, giving your body time to adjust to the high altitude. You will also have the opportunity to explore the Gokyo Valley and its stunning turquoise lakes.
A short hike takes you up to Gokyo Ri (5,430 m / 17,519 ft), one of the most famous viewpoints in the region. From here, you can admire four of the world’s six highest peaks: Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m), and Cho Oyu (8,188 m). After enjoying the panoramic views, you will descend back to Gokyo village. The tranquil lakes, framed by towering snow-capped peaks, provide the perfect setting for photography and relaxation.
After a day of acclimatization in Gokyo, the trek continues toward Thangnak, situated on the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier. The trail is relatively short with several ups and downs but no significant elevation gain. Along the way, you’ll pass the Ngozumpa Glacier, experiencing its unique glacial landscapes and enjoying serene, breathtaking views.
Thangnak offers a peaceful and strategic base for hikers preparing to cross the Cho La Pass (5,330 m) the following day. The tranquil surroundings provide a perfect setting to rest and prepare for the challenges ahead.
After an early breakfast, the trek begins from Thangnak, ascending rocky trails and glacial deposits toward the Cho La Pass. The climb to the pass is challenging but rewarding, offering spectacular views of Chola Lake and Mount Cholatse (6,440 m).
The descent from the pass requires careful navigation, as the path can be icy and slippery. The trail winds through stunning high-altitude landscapes, providing breathtaking vistas throughout the journey. After approximately 6–7 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Dzongla, a picturesque village nestled among towering peaks, and settle in for the night. Conquering Cho La Pass is a highlight of the trek, leaving a lasting sense of achievement and awe.
Leaving Dzongla, the trail descends briefly along the sediments near Cho La Lake, then follows the Khumbu Glacier, offering dramatic views of the surrounding peaks. Along the way, you’ll pass a memorial honoring climbers who have lost their lives in the region.
Compared to the previous day’s challenging ascent, today’s trek to Lobuche is relatively gentle. The trail follows Imja Khola before reaching the small settlement of Lobuche after about four hours of trekking. Here, you reconnect with the classic Everest Base Camp trail, preparing for the final stretch toward the base of the world’s highest peak.
Today marks a major highlight of your trek as you journey from Lobuche toward Mount Everest Base Camp (EBC). The trail gradually becomes steeper as you approach Gorak Shep. Upon arrival, you can leave your bags at the lodge before continuing to EBC.
Reaching Everest Base Camp is a moment of true accomplishment, reflecting the physical effort, determination, and perseverance required along the journey. From here, enjoy spectacular views of the Khumbu Glacier and surrounding Himalayan giants. This is the perfect opportunity for photography and to soak in the sense of achievement.
After spending time at the base camp, you will return to Gorak Shep for the night, reflecting on a milestone day in your Everest adventure. The surrounding peaks and glacier views make this an unforgettable experience.
We start early from Gorak Shep for a hike to Kala Patthar, where you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. This viewpoint offers one of the most spectacular perspectives of Everest and the Khumbu Glacier, making it a true highlight of the trek.
After enjoying the scenery, we descend back to Gorak Shep for breakfast and a short rest, then continue trekking through stunning alpine landscapes to Pheriche, our destination for the day. This stretch allows time to reflect on the achievements and memories of your Everest Base Camp journey.
After waking in Pheriche, the trek descends through forests where you may spot wildlife such as pheasants, musk deer, and mountain goats. Along the trail, you’ll see numerous prayer flags and chortens, and this is your final opportunity to catch a glimpse of Mount Everest.
Continuing through traditional villages and scenic landscapes, you will arrive at Namche Bazaar, the bustling Sherpa town. The descent offers fresh perspectives on the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region. Once in Namche, you can relax and soak in the lively atmosphere, enjoying the comforts and vibrant culture of this iconic Himalayan town.
Today marks the final day of your trek. After breakfast, we begin the descent from Namche Bazaar through the Dudh Kosi River Valley, crossing the Hillary Suspension Bridge and passing several charming villages along the way. The trail winds through familiar forests and scenic landscapes, offering one last chance to absorb the beauty of the Khumbu region.
Upon reaching Lukla, you can refresh and relax at your lodge, reflecting on the challenges overcome and the memories created during this remarkable journey. This final night in the Everest region is a perfect moment to celebrate your achievement and bid farewell to the Himalayas before returning to Kathmandu.
On the final day of your trek, you will take an early morning flight back to Kathmandu, offering one last chance to enjoy the breathtaking Himalayan scenery. Depending on the season, flights may route via Manthali, with a drive to Kathmandu, or operate directly from Lukla. For those preferring a faster option, a helicopter transfer can be arranged at approximately $550 per person (shared among five travelers).
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for relaxation or optional sightseeing, reflecting on the unforgettable memories of your Everest Base Camp adventure. Later in the day, Best Heritage Tours will host a farewell dinner, celebrating your incredible journey through the Himalayas.
On the final day, you may have some free time to enjoy last-minute shopping or a final walk through the streets of Kathmandu. Later, our representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure flight. This marks the conclusion of your Everest Base Camp trek and Nepal adventure, leaving you with lasting memories of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and a truly unforgettable journey.
