Day-wise Itinerary
Detailed itinerary for 16 Days Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake

The journey begins with an early morning transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for a scenic flight to Lukla, offering sweeping views of the Himalayan range. Depending on the season, flights may operate directly from Kathmandu or be rerouted through Manthali Airport during peak trekking months (March–May and September–November). In that case, you will be picked up around 12:30 a.m., driven five hours to Manthali, and then take a 20-minute flight to Lukla. Direct flights from Kathmandu are available in the off-season months, while a shared helicopter option from Kathmandu to Lukla (around USD 550 per person for a group of five) is also available year-round.

Upon arrival at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,850 m / 9,350 ft), the trek officially begins. Today’s hike is kept short to allow for gradual acclimatization. The trail descends through Chaurikharka village and follows the Dudh Koshi River before reaching Phakding. Along the way, you’ll enjoy your first taste of Sherpa culture and Himalayan landscapes. With extra time, you may visit the Rimishung Monastery in Phakding.

  • Transport: Flight to Lukla (30Min)
  • Time: 3 Hours Trek
  • Max altitude: 2850 m

Leaving Phakding, the trail continues north along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges decorated with colorful prayer flags, including the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge. The route gradually ascends through pine and rhododendron forests, with occasional glimpses of snow-covered peaks.

After entering Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, your permits will be checked before continuing the steady climb. Along the way, you’ll enjoy your first clear views of Mount Everest and other towering summits.

The day’s hike ends at Namche Bazaar, the lively Sherpa town that serves as the cultural and trading hub of the Khumbu region. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, Namche offers a perfect blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty.

  • Distance: 7.4 KM
  • Time: 6 Hrs
  • Max altitude: 3440 m

Today is reserved for rest and acclimatization, an essential part of preparing for the higher altitudes ahead. Namche Bazaar, the main trading town of the Khumbu region, is the perfect place to spend the day.

You can take short hikes to nearby viewpoints for closer views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other peaks. Exploring the town itself offers a glimpse into Sherpa culture, with visits to the Sherpa Culture Museum, local markets, and shops selling traditional crafts, cheese, and trekking gear.

Other options include the Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Center, the Hillary School, a yak farm, or one of the local monasteries, each adding to the cultural experience. Namche also has several cafes, restaurants, and lodges with Wi-Fi, making it a lively spot to relax.

This acclimatization day is not only about resting but also about absorbing the unique atmosphere of the Sherpa capital.

  • Max altitude: 3440 m

Today, the route diverges from the classic Everest Base Camp trail, which normally heads to Tengboche. The path to Dole is rocky with several ups and downs. About two hours into the hike, you will reach Mong La Pass (3,957 m), where sweeping views of Mt. Ama Dablam (6,812 m) and Mt. Khumbila (5,761 m) await. Leaving Dole, the trail climbs through alpine meadows that serve as yak pastures during the summer months. These meadows are often adorned with shrines and fluttering prayer flags. In summer, yaks graze peacefully here, while in winter the area becomes barren as locals migrate to lower altitudes to escape the cold.

The trek continues with spectacular views of Mt. Cho Oyu, the world’s fifth-highest peak. The route passes through quaint villages such as La Palma and Ruja, before reaching Machhermo, a serene settlement nestled amidst towering mountains. On the way, the trail descends slightly through the Kentega Valley, ascends toward the Cho Oyu massif, and climbs near the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier. Machhermo offers a peaceful stop to rest and acclimatize further.

  • Time: 5-6 Hr
  • Max altitude: 4470 m
  • Accomodation: Hotel/Lodge

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the Gokyo Valley, with the highlight being the Gokyo Lakes. Leaving Machhermo early, the trail first passes through high alpine meadows to reach Phanga, where a memorial honors those who lost their lives in past landslides.

As the path narrows, you will encounter the first Gokyo Lake, the smallest of the five major glacial lakes in the area. Continuing a short distance past the third lake, you arrive at Gokyo village, one of Nepal’s highest settlements, nestled in the heart of the valley. From here, Gokyo Ri rises above, offering one of the region’s most famous viewpoints.

The turquoise waters of the lakes, framed by towering snow-capped peaks, create a serene and breathtaking atmosphere. Upon reaching Gokyo, you will settle into your lodge and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, preparing for the upcoming adventures in this remarkable Himalayan setting.
