The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is a spiritual journey that takes you through the heart of the Himalayas to the sacred Mount Kailash and the pristine Lake Manasarovar. This 10-day expedition is not just a physical trek but a pilgrimage that offers a profound spiritual experience, drawing pilgrims and adventurers alike from around the world.
Embark on a spiritually enriching 15-day Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Kathmandu, a journey that extends beyond Nepal's borders into the western expanse of Tibet. This sacred pilgrimage attracts seekers from around the globe, drawn to the divine aura of Mount Kailash, revered as the abode of Lord Shiva, and the celestial Lake Manasarovar.
Mount Kailash, also known as Sumeru Parvat, stands majestically at 6,714 meters, capturing the devotion of various spiritual traditions. For Buddhists, it's the dwelling of Avalokiteshvara, while Hindus consider it the realm of Lord Shiva, the Kailash Pati. The mountain's striking pyramidal form and its spiritual resonance make it a beacon for those seeking enlightenment.
Nestled at Kailash's base, Lake Manasarovar, one of the highest freshwater lakes globally, holds profound religious significance, being a source of four major rivers. Pilgrims often partake in ceremonial dips in the lake, believed to absolve sins and liberate the soul from the cycle of birth and death.
The overland yatra is a testament to the pilgrim's fortitude, navigating the rugged Tibetan terrain, acclimatizing to high altitudes, and weathering the unpredictable. Starting with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the journey unfolds through Kerung, the gateway to Tibet, presenting an ever-changing tapestry of landscapes.
Gateway Adventure Treks and Expedition, has been operating the Kailash Manasarovar tours; our tour guides has been guiding pilgrims, blending local knowledge with heartfelt devotion to create an unparalleled pilgrimage experience.
For this Kailash Yatra, we’ve created a 15-day schedule taking into account the distance of the Yatra trails and the required acclimatization days in between. Nevertheless, if you just have a few days available or want to cut the yatra a little short, we may adjust it by slashing the suggested 1-2 days, based on the current state of the weather, the time of year, and other factors.
The yatra, designed for small groups, ensures personalized attention, with meticulously chosen accommodations and expertly prepared vegetarian meals. The journey is peppered with rituals, havans, and dips in Manasarovar, facilitated with care, including arrangements for warm showers at the lake's edge.
Joining this yatra with Gateway Adventure Treks and Expedition means not just a pilgrimage but an exploration of self, guided by a team committed to making every step of your journey spiritually rewarding and safe, ensuring a path where every pilgrim is not just a traveler, but a seeker of the divine.

Begin your spiritual journey with a warm welcome at Tribhuvan International Airport, followed by a transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu. As you settle in, take the opportunity to explore the vibrant Thamel area, known for its bustling market streets and colorful atmosphere. This initial day in the city will also include preparations for the upcoming yatra, ensuring all participants are ready for the adventure ahead.
As part of the Holy Yatra, our sightseeing will be in the holy places in Kathmandu. After breakfast, our guide will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the Swayambhunath Stupa, also called the Monkey Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the religious pilgrimages for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is situated on the west side of Kathmandu on top of the hill with 365 steps that take you to the giant dome-shaped stupa. You will have a beautiful bird eye view of Kathmandu from this sacred place and it is one of the viewpoints in Kathmandu. After, strolling around the stupa and clicking some memories we then travel to Budhanilkantha.
Budhanilkantha is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Vishnu and is one of the most sacred and important temples for Hindus. You will get to see the reclining long statue of Lord Vishnu in the pond. The most interesting thing (not known by many people) about this temple is the oldest belief which says the King (now former) of Nepal should not visit this temple, as the King is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. This temple is believed to be from the 5th century. We then drive to one of the Hindu holy sites, Pashupatinath Temple.
Pashupatinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the sacred sites for Hindus. This temple is situated on the bank of the holy Bagmati River where you will witness the Hindu Cremation. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the temple and worship but one can stroll around the temple as it has covered a wide area where you will find numerous other temples and lots of spots to stop by and interact with. We will spend some time here and then we will drive to Nagarkot, a beautiful hill station above Kathmandu. It is a beautiful view point and also helps us to acclimatize.
We will wake up early to see the Sunrise and mountain view. The morning view of snow-capped mountains like Ganesh Himal, Annapurna, Manaslu, and Everest range are spectacular on a clear day!
After watching the sunrise, we will hike down toward Dhulikhel / Bhaktapur. The hike will be 3/ 4 hrs. and the walk inside the village and pine forest will keep you occupied enjoying the greenery and peace. Also, you will find some small settlements on the way. Later we will drive back to Kathmandu via Bhaktapur. A beautiful city inside the valley that has historical importance along with a culturally rich community.
We will visit Doleshower Mahadev Temple and if time permits the Bhaktapur Durbar Square and then drive you back to your hotel in Kathmandu. In the evening, we will brief you about the Kailash yatra and also do some packing.
You will have breakfast in the hotel and then we will start our Kailash Mansarovar Yatra with a scenic drive to Syabrubesi around 7 AM. This drive follows the Trishuli River and the small settlements & terraced farms along the way will make the drive exciting. After 3/4 hrs. of driving, we will reach Trishuli bazaar where we will have lunch. After lunch, we will continue the drive to Syabrubesi which will take up to 3 to 4 hours.
Reaching Syabrubesi, we will check in the hotel and rest. In the evening, you can stroll around the Syabrubesi town.
After breakfast at the Syabrubesi Hotel, the journey to the Nepal-China Border Kerung begins. It’s a 2-hour drive and we will brief you on the journey about the Kailash Yatra. Once we reach there some border formalities ( checking of visa, passport, baggage etc) and continue the journey with our Nepal and Tibetan crew.
After clearing all the formalities at the border port we drive to Kerung, or Gyirong is a small town settled on the Himalayan slope on the Nepal-Tibet border. One can stop in this area and relax for a day during the travel between Nepal and Tibet.
This town offers a lot of spots to visit, but the most visited and top spot is Bhirkuti Cave. Also, you can find various historical monuments. There is a monastery named Pakba Monastery constructed for the protection of the border by Tibetan King Songtsen Gambo in the 7th century. Overnight at Hotel in Kerung.
We have a day here at Kerung, or Gyirong to do some acclimatize hiking about 3/4 hours.
This town offers a lot of spots to visit, but the most visited and top spot is Bhirkuti Cave. Also, you can find various historical monuments. There is a monastery named Pakba Monastery constructed for the protection of the border by Tibetan King Songtsen Gambo. We will also conduct some exercise and meditation.
Overnight at Kerung
After the breakfast, we drive from Kerung to Saga / Parayang. The scenic journey with the Tibetan Mountains will keep us occupied. Later, we turn our journey to the north, cross the Holy Brahmaputra River ( Yarlung Zangpo), and reach Saga. A lovely town with several reasonable hotels or guesthouses will be the perfect place to stop by. This Saga town offers a decent welcome with good local foods and also, the little market is worth strolling.
Overnight at Saga / Parayang.
After having breakfast in Saga, we drive to Mansarovar Lake. It will take about 7 – 8 hours to reach mansarovar this day. Before reaching Manasarovar, we will stop by the famous spot Horchu from where we get the first glimpse of Mount Kailash – a special Darshan on a clear day! We will spend some time praying, clicking photographs, capturing landscapes, and then head towards Mansarovar. We will use the Nagri Kailash Bus service to do the Parikrama of Lake Mansarovar. We will reach Chui Gompa, check in at the guest house, freshen up, and take a rest.
Night at Lake Mansarovar: Many travelers want to see stars or apsara at Lake Mansarovar at night. Many may witness its beauty under the moonlight. Though visiting the lake at night is completely safe it is advisable to go in a group and if possible take our expert team with you for any required help. Dress properly with warm clothes as the temperature outside will be cold. Good idea to carry a torch and a whistle too. It is believed that Apsara from Swarga or even Lord Parvati visits Manasarovar at night to take a bath and go back.
Overnight stay at Mansarovar Lake.
Half day at MANASAROVAR for Puja and Havana and acclimatization and Drive to Darchen ( base of Kailash)
A beautiful day at the piece of Heaven. We can visit the powerful Chiu Monastery, we can take deep at lake Manasarovar or we also provide warm water from the Lake in a Bathing tent then join pious Puja or Havan at lake, and later of the day prepare for Kailash Parikrama/packing/discussion about extra horse/yak/porter booking etc. B, L, D
Note: If people wish to go Darchen town base of Kailash on this day we can drive there to, but many people prefer to stay at Mansarovar and start Parikrama directly driving to Tharboche the next day to start the Kailash Parikrama.
Early in the morning, we will drive around 58 km or 14 KM and reach the THarboche ( near Yama Dwar).
We then meet our porters/horse ( if you hire them) and prepare ourselves for the Parikrama or Khora of holy Kailash Parvat – called Gang or Kang Rinpoche in Tibetan language. Kailash Yatra Parikarma starts from Yama Dwar at Tharboche.
From Yama Dwar, we will walk for around 6 to 7 hours to reach Diraphuk the north face of Holy Mt.Kailash.
During this Kailash Parikrama yatra, we get a close view of Mount Kailash. Once we reach Diraphuk we can view the beautiful north face of Mount Kailash.
About Kailash Parikrama :
Almost Everyone comes to make Kailash Khora meaning circumulation of Hoy Mt. Kailash going through the highest pass Dolma La (5,645m). Although local Tibetan people make Kailash Khora in a single day, it takes three days for us and the total walk is about 52-kilometer but since we can drive a bit both ways (starting and ending point of Parikrama now) it is a total of 38 KM we have to walk in 3 days. This Kailash Parikrama is called the outer Khora of Kailash.
But people who are not able to make the whole Parikrama for some reason have the option to go up to the North face of Kailash, do some puja, and back to Darchen and wait for group members to finish. We have specially added one more day in North Face to touch the Kailash which is called “Kailash Charan sparsa “a special moment in life. Not every company does it.
The extra day in Diraphuk ( north face) is to acclamatize and also to get a Divine experience at this unique place. How far we can walk to Charana sparsa ( touching Kailash) depends on weather, your helathand Chinese govt. military permission.
Tharboche and Diraphuk a well-known holy places for organizing events during festivals. They organize a grand event during the Saga Dawa Festival. If we are lucky and reach during the festival time, then we get to explore more about the culture and traditions of the local communities.
Overnight at Diraphuk – simple Guest house.
We will wake you early in the morning to witness the Golden Kailash during the time of sunrise. As the first sunlight kisses the summit of Mount Kailash, it turns golden, and that view is awesome.
Kailash Charan Spash walk – touching feet of Kailash Parvat:
Today we do a sacred walk from Derapuk monastery to the feet of Kailash Parvat on the north face side of the mountain, a total of about 7 km distance. We all will try to reach the base of Mt. Kailash Parvat – the Charan – or touch the feet of Mt. Kailash. ( Depending on the weather, your health and the permission of the Chinese military/police). The Kailash Charan sparsa hike is a heavenly beautiful walk through a bank of milky water and snowfall from the top of Kailash mountain itself, it may feel a bit heavy to breathe due to the altitude. We will walk slowly and drink lots of water. We can do some meditation and Puja on feet of Kailash as well. The Charan sparsa trek in Kailash is also considered as part of Inner Kailash Parikarama.
We will be seeking blessing from Lord Shiva at this beautiful pilgrimage, expectation of positive energy. Kailash parvat is axis of the Mundi and Ganges flowing from Shiva’s matted hair ( Jatta ). By touching the miracle feet of Mount Kailash and the Ganges axis people get moksha – salvation, a rebirth. It is believed that the Ganges is the water that flows from the melted snow of Kailash and interestingly enough 4 of the major river in Asia Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali originated within a 50 KM radius of Kailash mountain. That is why May be Kailash is known as Sumeru Parvat or the center of the earth.
Early morning breakfast we will strat the second day of Kailash Parikrama ( Kora). We will walk around 8 – 10 hrs. to reach the Zuthulphuk Gompa. The Kailash Parikrama yatra of today is the most difficult and we will be walking around 22km via Dolma la pass.
During the 2nd day of the Kailash Yatra, we will ascend towards the Dolma La Pass (Parvati Pass), the highest point (5,670 m. or 18,504–18,602 ft.) of the whole Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Before reaching the Drolma La Pass, there is a site where Milarepa and Shiva Tsal’s footprints can be seen. Once we reach the Pass, we will pray, the pass is decorated with colorful prayer flags. From Dolma La Pass we will be descending, On the way down, we will see Gauri Kund or Parvati Taal , and we will ask our Sherpa to collect some holy Jal from here for us. We will continue our journey to Zuthulphuk Valley. Once we reach Zuthulphuk, we may visit the monastery there. It is rewarding but a long walk today.
Note: Nowadays if you wish we can take emergency Jeep service to Darchen from Zothulphuk Valley near tea shop shortening the Kailash yatra journey by at least 12 KM ( optional at extra cost).
Overnight at Zuthulphuk – simple Guest house
Today is the last day of Khora or Kailash Parikrama. Early morning, we will have our breakfast and then start walking Toward Darchen. After walking for around 10 km, we reached the Hor Qu Village. From here we will take a vehicle to reach Darchen Town, collect our all bags and after lunch we will drive back to Saga ( a bit long day).
Overnight at a hotel in Saga.
We will have early breakfast and drive to Syabrubesi. After crossing the Brahmaputra River, we will drive forward to Nepal China border, where you will farewell your Tibetan guide.
Now, we will go to the Rasuwagadi China and Nepalese Immigration Checkpoint and complete the formalities. From there our representative will take you to Syabrubesi and drive to Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel.
Rest and stay in the Kathmandu hotel.
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport three hours before your planned flight departs for your home country or the next destination.
You can end this Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by visiting the Pashupatinath Temple again if you wish.
Note: It is always good to add and advisable one more day in Kailash Yatra just in case we need an extra day due to landslides, visas, sicknesses, flight delays etc.
For the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, travelers need a China/Tibet group visa and a military travel permit. If you're traveling from Kathmandu, we'll manage the visa and permit for you. You'll need to send us your passport with at least six months' validity in advance. We'll arrange the China/Tibet visa using your original passport once you arrive in Kathmandu, allowing you time to explore the city and acclimatize. For Nepal, you can obtain a visa upon arrival, but ensure it's a multiple-entry visa as the tour returns to Kathmandu.
The Kailash Parikrama or Kora is a 38 km walk over three days, shortened from the original 54 km due to drivable access to Tharboche. The first day's walk to Diraphuk is about 10 km and takes 6-8 hours, considered moderately challenging. The second day, the toughest, covers 18 km to Zuthulphuk, taking up to 12 hours. The final day involves an 8-10 km walk lasting 5-6 hours. Options for horses and porters are available for those who need assistance.
There isn't a conventional temple at Kailash Manasarovar. The sacred Mount Kailash (Sumeru Parvat) and Lake Manasarovar are the focal points for worship and rituals. Pilgrims perform pujas, take holy baths, and engage in meditation at these sites. The area is imbued with spiritual significance, with many believing in visions of deities based on their faith and meditation experiences.
The Yatra offers a variety of vegetarian meals prepared by our experienced cooking team. Menu items include porridge, roti, daal, pasta, rice, soups, and more, all freshly prepared. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with prior notice to ensure a satisfying and nourishing experience throughout the journey.
The Yatra includes stays in hotels and guesthouses, chosen for their comfort and location. While luxurious amenities shouldn't be expected, all basic necessities are met, including sleeping bags, jackets, and portable bathroom facilities. Accommodations are selected to provide comfort and restfulness on your spiritual journey.
The advertised helicopter tour to Kailash is quite misleading as there is no permission to fly a Helicopter in Tibet / China at Kailash region due to security. So the Kailash helicopter tour takes you to the Nepal / Tibet border town of Hilsa and from there, people take a Jeep or bus to Mansarovar and complete the Kailash Mansarovar tour and back to Hilsa and there take a helicopter and back to Simikot Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.
So no helicopter goes to Kailash and we don’t recommend helicopter tours due to 3 reasons. Reason no. 1 is it is going too high too quickly so you may get sick. Reason no. 2 is due to bad weather lot of times the helicopter flights are canceled or delayed and you may end up spending more time and money, at the same time disappointed. Reason no. 3 is you will be spending more money. The best we always suggest is 15 15-day Kailash Overland tour from Kathmandu.
To travel to the Kailash Mansarovar region we need a China / Tibet group Visa and a military travel permit. If you are travelling via Kathmandu with Earthbound Expeditions we will take care of the Visa and permit for you. You need to send us at least 6 months’ valid passport in advance. We will proceed for a Visa and permit and we will get China / Tibet visa when you are here with your original passport, while you are visiting Pashupatinath and doing some acclimatization hikes around Kathmandu.
Nepal visa you can get upon arrival, please get a multiple entry Visa for Nepal as we are coming back to Kathmandu after the trip.
If you are travelling via China / Lhasa, you can get visa at home and we will deliver Tibet travel permit for you. We will send instructions and invitation letter of you decided to travel Via China / Lhasa not Kathmandu. We have experience of 25 years to handle Tibet travel permit and Visa so you just plan your Kailash Mansarovar yatra and we take care of all the logistices.
The Kailash Parikrama or Kailash Kora walk total from Darchen to Darchen is 54 KM, but since now you can drive up to Tharboche, Yama Dwar to start the Parikrama and you can end the walk at Sarsiyu Valley end of Zothulphuk now total walk becomes only 38 Kms in 3 days. The first day from Tharboche (Yama Dwar) to Diraphuk the north face of Kailash walk is about 10 Km total which is not so hard and it is about 6 to 8 hours of walk.
The 2nd day of Parikrama to Shivastal and to Dolma la is the hardest and longest one all the way to Zutholphuk it is a total of about 18 KM and it takes about 10 to 12 hours max. We start quite early and it is a full day’s walk slowly.
The 3rd day is again about 8 to 10 Km walk and it is about 5 to 6 hours of walk. You can take a horse at extra cost if you can’t walk all (a horse is useful for uphill only). You can also hire an extra porter at Kailash at extra cost. The walking stick can be useful.
Although it takes 3 days for us to Kailash Parikrama the local Tibetan pilgrims does in one day.
We have a solid team of cooks, helpers, and strong sherpas. All our meals provided during the yatra often consist of vegetarians and many varieties freshly prepared at our own kitchen and delicious. We serve like porridge, Musli, roti, daal, pakodas, paratha, rice, Rajma, veg . curry, pasta, puri, halawa, rasam, Khichadi, soup, milk, tea, coffee, born vita, biscuits, curds, all sorts of meals to suit your taste and health. Every day we serve hot food prepared in our expedition kitchen for you. Special dietary needs can sometimes be accommodated if communicated in advance before Yatra begains. Our food in Kailash Manasarovar yatra so good that often our yatri want to take our cooks home.
Accommodations during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra usually include a mix of hotels and guesthouses. in Kathmandu we use 4 and 5 star hotels. During the Kailash yatra time we will use good guest houses and hotels. However, the level of comfort can vary; all basic facilities are provided, but don’t expect very luxurious.
We provide a sleeping bag, jacket, duffle bag, and Benie for you. We also provide shower tents for baths in Lake Mansarovar and also carry toilet tents. We try our best for your comfortable journey, which we have been doing last 26 years and people are very happy with our services.
As of now, there is no record of anyone having climbed Kailash. As this is a holy land and a very holy peak no permission is granted. People might have tried but no one succeed and it claims that people will not be able to climb it.
