Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world and has attracted many climbers since it was first climbed in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary. Climbing Mt. Everest is considered one of the most difficult feats in mountaineering. The ascent involves a variety of obstacles including steep slopes, huge ice walls as well as hidden crevasses and sudden weather changes.
An Everest expedition is challenging and thrilling in equal parts. Without doubt, Mt. Everest is one of the most challenging mountains to climb; many experienced mountaineers have tried and failed, for a variety of reasons. Going unprepared is never an option when tackling any 8,000m peak, and especially so for Mt. Everest. Mountaineering experience, fitness, mental attitude, correct equipment, a competent team, and good luck, are what makes for a successful ascent. If possible, we recommend you climb Mt. Manaslu or Mt. Cho Oyu as preparation for an Everest attempt.

Climbing Everest from the Nepal side is more demanding than the North Col (Tibet) route. In part this is due to the complicated, and sometimes dangerous, route through the Khumbu Ice Fall to Camp 1. Above that the route is still demanding but with far less objective danger.

Getting to Mount Everest
Reaching Mount Everest is a challenging and dangerous undertaking that requires physical and mental preparation, as well as specialized gear and equipment.
There are two main approaches to reaching the summit of Mount Everest: the South Col route, which starts in Nepal, and the Northeast Ridge route, which starts in Tibet (China). Most climbers choose to reach the mountain base camp in Nepal and then follow the South Col route, as the climbing permit and support services are more readily available there.
Mount Everest via the South Col route
Here are the steps to reach the summit of Mount Everest via the South Col route:
- Arrange logistics: This includes obtaining a climbing permit from the Nepalese government, hiring a guide and porter service, and obtaining necessary equipment and supplies.
- Fly to Kathmandu: Most climbers fly to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and then take a domestic flight to Lukla, the starting point for the trek to base camp.
- Trek to base camp: The trek to base camp takes several days and involves crossing bridges, climbing steep hills, and navigating rough terrain. The altitude and weather conditions can be challenging, so it's important to acclimatize properly.
- Establish base camp: Once you reach the base camp, you'll set up your tent and start preparing for the climb. This includes acclimatizing to the altitude, practicing climbing techniques, and preparing gear and equipment.
- Climb to higher camps: The climb to the summit involves several intermediate camps, each at a higher altitude. Climbers typically spend a few days at each camp to acclimatize and prepare for the next stage of the ascent.
- Reach the summit: The final ascent to the summit is a grueling, physically demanding effort that takes several days. Climbers must overcome extremely high altitudes, harsh weather conditions, and difficult terrain.
Challenges of reaching Mount Everest
The challenges of reaching the summit of Mount Everest include the altitude, which can cause altitude sickness; the weather, which can change rapidly and create hazardous conditions; and the physical demands of climbing, which can be extremely taxing. It's important to be well prepared and to have the proper training and experience before attempting to reach the summit.
