Biska Jatra (Bisket Jatra): A fusion of tradition and uniqueness image

Bisket Jatra is a vibrant, nine-day annual festival in Bhaktapur, Nepal, marking the Solar New Year (mid-April) and spring's arrival. Centered around Tantric deities Bhairab and Bhadrakali, it features massive chariot processions, a "tug-of-war" between city sides, and the raising of a ceremonial pole (Lyo Sin Dyo) to signify victory over evil forces.

Key Highlights & Rituals

  • Chariot Procession: Elaborate, multi-storied wooden chariots carrying Lord Bhairab and Bhadrakali are pulled through narrow streets by thousands of locals, leading to a dramatic tug-of-war between the upper and lower parts of the city.
  • Lyo Sin Dyo (Pole Raising): On the last day of the old year, a 25-meter-high wooden pole is raised at Lyasinkhel, symbolizing the victory over two serpents that, according to legend, left a princess's nose, changed into huge snakes, and were killed by a young man with Tantric powers.
  • Sindur Jatra (Vermilion Festival): Celebrated, particularly in Thimi, where locals cover each other with orange vermilion powder while carrying 32 palanquins of various deities.
  • Tongue Piercing: A dramatic, ancient ritual in Bode village where a devotee has their tongue pierced with a metal spike and parades around with a wooden rack of flaming torches on their shoulders to ensure prosperity.
